For Immediate Release.
Update on the future Academy of Veterinary Surgical Technicians (AVST)

As the newly elected President for the (yet to be recognized by NAVTA) Academy of Veterinary Surgical Technicians, I am pleased to announce the first formal meeting of the organizing committee occurred on October 24, 2008, at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Forum in San Diego, California.

The committee made great strides as we discussed application deficiencies and ways to move this new veterinary technician specialty to fruition. Moreover, the AVST was welcomed with much enthusiasm and support from the attending veterinary technicians, ACVS diplomates, and numerous veterinary corporate sponsors.

We are currently seeking more credentialed, highly qualified and dedicated veterinary technicians to join our organizing committee. If you are highly motivated and believe you meet the qualifications needed to propel the AVST forward, please contact Teri Raffel ASAP at traffel@matcmadison.edu to obtain an application.

Respectfully submitted by Heidi Reuss-Lamky, LVT, VTS (Anesthesia)
President - Academy of Veterinary Surgical Technicians.

For Immediate Release - NAVTA Announces Approval of New Veterinary Technician Behavior Specialty.

Recently the Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties (CVTS), a subcommittee of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), met in New Orleans, LA during the 2008 AVMA Convention. During this important meeting, members of CVTS worked hard to develop new initiatives to promote and support the veterinary technician specialties as well as review any new petitions for specialty recognition.

After reviewing the petition submitted by the Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (AVBT), the Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties is pleased to award the AVBT with Provisional Recognition as defined by the guidelines on veterinary technician specialties.

AVBT is now the fifth officially recognized veterinary technician specialty and will enhance this very vital area of professional development in the veterinary technology profession. The other specialties are: Anesthesia, Critical Care, Dentistry and Internal Medicine.

The AVBT will officially be inducted as a NAVTA specialty at the NAVTA Annual General Membership meeting at the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, FL, January 2009. For more information on this exciting new specialty for veterinary technicians, please visit the SVBT.

In addition, CVTS has decided to implement some new initiatives in the coming year. NAVTA will provide each of the NAVTA recognized Specialty Academies a feature section in the NAVTA Journal each year; including a spot for articles, resources and print materials provided to any Veterinary Technician with VTS status for promotion of the VTS within their place of employment and community, adding one ad hoc position on the CVTS for each recognized NAVTA Specialty Academy, develop and support continuing education programs for veterinary technician specialists, provide networking and support to organizations /individuals trying to start a veterinary technician specialty academy and increasing CVTS presence at major conferences such as AAHA and AVMA each year.

For more information on CVTS and veterinary technician specialties please visit NAVTA or email CVTS Co-Chairman Amy Butzier MEd, CVT.

Vet Tech Program News

March 9, 2005

We had a great continuing education lecture sponsored by Idexx about Diagnostic Hematology by the Veterinary Technician - A critical role that can be played with simple practice. It was held at the Sheraton in Portsmouth, NH and the speaker was Dr.Dennis B. DeNicola, DVM, PhD, DACVP, Chief Veterinary Educator, Clinical Pathologist.

Dr DeNicola is an excellent speaker and not only explained about the importance of doing in house and referral lab hematology, he also had excellent slides of blood slides that might be found. This lecture was both technical, and light-hearted as Dr. DeNicola presented his top 10 things to note about red blood cells, white blood cells, and the top 2 items for platelets.

Congratulations to the New Hampshire Community Technical College in Stratham! After years of hard work, Dr. Peg MacGregor, DVM and Lois Senecal, MS, LVT, CVT achieved their goal of attaining full AVMA Accreditation for the Veterinary Technician Program.

They are the only AVMA accredited Vet Tech program in the state of New Hampshire. In this two-year Associate Degree in Science program, students have core classes in introduction to veterinary technology, anatomy and physiology, clinical methods, microbiology, large animal management and laboratory animal science.

Students also complete two in-hospital internships; an 8-week internship in the summer at the end of their first year of study; and a 12-week internship during the spring of their senior year. During their senior year, each student also does a 3-day rotation in surgery and a 3-day rotation in emergency care. In these rotations they gain valuable experience in emergency medicine and critical care including radiology, phlebotomy, IV catheterization, fluid therapy, pain management, drug calculations, anesthesia induction, monitoring and recovery.
