** VTNE Moves to Computer-based Testing - Summer 2010 **

Certification and Recertification

It is each veterinary technician's responsibility to make sure they earn 12 continuing education credits annually, in order to maintain their NH certification status. The NHVTA does not keep track of CEUs for veterinary technicians who attend NHVTA approved seminars. If you submit more than 12 CEUs for any one year's certification, we do not bookkeep the extra CEUs and hold onto them for you for the next year.

As a professional, it is incumbent upon each technician to keep track of their own CEU records and retain their attendance certificate from each seminar, in order to certify or recertify before the year end deadline of December 31st (mail in the application, submit copies of 12 CEU's earned and a payment check).

Veterinary Technician National Exam

Beginning in 2005, the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) is managed by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). The VTNE is offered to veterinary technicians who have graduated from a 2, 3 or 4 year AVMA accredited program. This is the AAVSB's ruling and not a decision by the NHVTA. Follow these links for more information on the VTNE and the AAVSB.

The last paper and pencil VTNE was January 15, 2010. Beginning with the summer of 2010, the Computer Based VTNE will be given in testing window dates, at Prometric Testing Centers across the US and Canada. As of the Summer of 2010, the application fee for the VTNE is $300.

The testing windows for 2010 and 2011 are:

  • July 15 - Aug 15, with a deadline of June 15 for all documents.
  • November 15 - Dec 15, with a deadline of October 15 for all documents.

Follow this link to the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). From that web site, click on this link and read Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Please remember that after December 31, 2010, VTNE candidates must be graduates of an AVMA or CVMA approved veterinary technology program, or a program approved by the regulatory board of the jurisdiction where the examination is given.

The AAVSB now offers a VTNE Practice Exam Online. It is composed of 75 questions and allows candidates to experience the structure of the examination. You must complete the practice exam within 90 minutes. The cost for the practice exam is $45.00
